It’s that time of year, where our culture dictates that one year ends, and a new one begins. With a critical, yet optimistic eye, we look at each other and within ourselves, and sort through our hopes, dreams and aspirations.
I’ve just finished reading Ryan Shomer’s Retrospective & Resolute blog post and it got me really thinking about where I am and where I’m heading.
For those that know me, know that the first day of the new year is a magic day for me. I hold few superstitions, save one that is probably more cultural than anything. “What you do on the first day of the year, is what you’ll be doing for the rest of that year” It rests on the same level as that told to couples about “not going to bed mad at each other”
What I take from that is that no matter whatever happens, what pain or sorrow you face, that baggage should be taken off your back for a while so you don’t lose track of where you’re going. This is why Thanksgiving and Halloween are my favorite holidays, but that’s a story for another time.
With this year coming to an end, I would like to start what I hope will be come an ongoing tradition.
In 2008, I went to my first Comic Convention, which fueled my creative side, and resulted in me starting to draw once more.
In 2008, I filled up my first sketch diary in over 10 years.
In 2008, I’ve managed to start work on two potentially ongoing comic series, Banzai Babez and my yet untitled Steam Punk Comic.
In 2008, I managed to overcome my fear of public speaking and get used to dealing with attention from large groups of people…sort of.
In 2008, I have never been prouder to be a geek. In 2009, I will be even more proud.
In 2008, I have made some very special friends whom fill my life with joy.
In 2008, I dusted off some old projects that I hope will be with me until the next year, such as this site.
Looking back at the closing year, like all of you, I see where I want to take my life and career
In 2009, I’d like to be able to have a regularly updating comic series.
In 2009, I’d like to read George R. R. Martin’s new novel, if he ever decides to finish it.
In 2009, I’d like to start making more use of social networking and not be such a social recluse.
In 2009, I’d like to help my friends succeed at our independent projects.
In 2009, I’d like to develop either an iPhone or OpenSocial app.
I think Ryan said it best though, “In 2009, I’d like to do more”
