I R Fanboy – NYCC ’09
This past weekend, we gather to pay homage to the sheets of pulp that define our collective addiction, comics. This was the second time I’ve ever been to the NYCC, and this time around, I was in geek overdrive.
Last year’s con was a pivotal moment in my life. I’ve been a creative person most of my life, but that was my first time being saturated by such high levels of nerd love. It was life altering, and from that day forth, I swore upon the gilded girdles of Azgard, that I would get back into art, so save me Odin. While the con itself triggered that kind of raw emotion, credit goes to Brad Guigar, of Evil, Inc. and Halfpixel.com for being the catalyst. His book, “How to Make Webcomics” gave me the kick in the ass I needed, and guidance I required to follow the path of the comic. He wasn’t alone in writing the book, as it was a collaborative effort between him and three other talented artists (Kris Straub, Dave Kellett, and Scott Kurtz), but Brad’s soft sell sunk into my subconscious, and kept me focused. I have tried to repay him as best as I could, by stalking him throughout the con this year (you know you liked the attention!).
Anyhow, this year, I cut no corners at self promotion, and I followed up my vow by networking my greek ass off, and passing out as much of my artwork to whomever was willing to take it. Lucky for me, I was using Moo.com business cards, with my original artwork on them. They stuck out, even though they are significantly smaller than standard cards, which proves that it’s not the size that counts, but how you use it.
The con was a great success for me, both professionally, and socially, as I had a great time, and engaged in various flavors of mischief.
I’m sure you can find pictures and videos of me and my cohorts on YouTube, Flickr, and even on Marvel’s NYCC09 live stream. I won’t give you the details, rather letting you search the interwebs for sightings of me and my band of infiltrators.
A special thanks goes out to Geisha Vi and her Banzai Babez for their company, Sempai-Tem for being Sempai-Tem, and Sam at Global Trading for the awesome kimono. Thank you to Brian Bendis (I have punished my friend for not knowing who you are) and David Mack for your awesome work on Daredevil, and taking the time out to greet some skrully fans. Also, thank you to Greg Horn for hopping out of your booth to take a photo with me. I’m sure it made your day as much as it made mine.
To Geeks With Issues, thanks for taking those photos and plastering them on your site. You’re making me feel all special!
